Essay on the Right to Life – Article 21 of the Constitution provides: “No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law.” The term ‘personal liberty’ in article 21 means nothing more than liberty of physical body, that is, freedom from arrest and detention without the authority of law.

On account of various judicial decisions, the scope of Right to life has been extended too many areas not expressly laid down in the law. For instance, right to healthy and pollution free environment, right to free legal aid, right to livelihood or work, right to privacy, right to education, right against sexual harassment of women etc.

Article 2: right to life. 1) Everyone’s right to life shall be protected by law. No one shall be deprived of his life intentionally save in the execution of a sentence of a court following his conviction of a crime for which this penalty is provided by law.

With regard to the other rights and freedoms, the right to life has a special position because of the consequences of its violation. Deaths result from the ultimate breaches of this right. Once this right is violated, there is no way to reverse its effect and to remedy the violation (Kratochvíl, 2006).
